A major problem in writing a persuasive text is working out the arguments of the “other side” and responding to those arguments. The following class task will help you see the need to work out the other point of view before writing any argument.

You are older now and your room is not as wonderful as it once was. It is time to try convince your parents to let you re-design your room.

When you go to ask them they reply:

NO!

and give you the following objections:

It’s too expensive.

You never even clean your room; why re-design?

You already spend too much time there. We only see you at meals as it is now.

You never spend any time in your room; why should we bother?

Your brother (sister) is going to feel left out. We can’t start redecorating everyone’s room.

Your taste in interior decoration is questionable. We can’t paint ceilings and walls in school colours or indulge in other such fads.

I’ll end up doing all the work. I don’t have the time or the energy.

It’ll cost too much.

I said “No!”

Task: Write a persuasion that will convince your parents to change their mind.

The the audience for your persuasion are your parents - an audience opposed to what you have to say. You must use direct speech and powerful words, though respectful and appropriate, to convince them of your side of the issue. This is done by providing arguments against the 9 objections from your parents. You may find it difficult to convince them on all nine objections, just do your best (8 out of 9 objections could still convince your parents to say yes).

Title: I want to re-design my room

Position: (outlines the issue and your point of view)

Arguments: ….. because ……

Conclusion: (restating position and main arguements)

When you have finished create a plan of how your new room will look.

It is scheduled to take place between 11 June and 11 July 2010 in South Africa. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the culmination of a qualification process that began in August 2007 and involved 204 of the 208 FIFA national teams. As such, it matches the 2008 Summer Olympics as the sports event with the most competing nations.

This will be the first time that the tournament has been hosted by an African nation, after South Africa beat Morocco and Egypt in an all-African bidding process. Italy are the defending champions.

Green Point Stadium Cape Town, at the foot of Table Mountain

Everyone in class, including me, will have one of 32 team pin that is randomly pulled from a container, you can swap if you find someone willing. You are then to complete the following tasks.

Task 1

South Africa is the host country and all the teams are staying at a particular host city. Find out the following information about the host city:

Name of host city

Province of host city

Population of host city

Climate of host city

3 places a tourist may enjoy visiting in the host city

What other teams in the 2010 FIFA World Cup are staying in this host city

Task 2

The countries competing in the 2010 Fifa World Cup are from all over the world. Write an exposition encouraging tourists to come visit your country. Your exposition will need to include at least 7 arguments with supporting evidence. ( See WritingFun for exposition help)

Time will be given in class to do some of your research and to draft, edit and publish your exposition.

For decades the professor worked on developing the perfect spell to enter other worlds and dimensions. One day in his basement he used the wood from a special ellowberry tree, the only one in the world, to construct three fancy wardrobes. He poured the juice of hodgeberries, frogs’ legs, mystical muir worms and tickle toad eyeballs onto the back of each wardrobe, hoping that at least one of the wardrobes would work. To his surprise all three wardrobes worked, though the last two both went to Narnia. The first one, the best of all, went to …...

Those students who would like to publish their Narnia/Wardrobe narrative on the class blog, can post it in the comments section of this post. It does not need to continue on from the blurb above as this is just an example of how the wardrobes came about. Your narrative is about where another wardrobe in the professors house may lead to.

We then played the song a couple of times and had a sing-along. Everyone did such a fantastic job we decided to record it straight away. You can find the song in our Podcast or click on play in the player below. I have also added the lyrics so you can sing along.

For we’re bound for the Botany Bay

Verse 1
Farewell to old England the beautiful
Farewell to me old pals as well
Farewell to the famous Old Bailey
Where I used to cut such a swell

Verse 2
It’s seven long years I’ve been serving
And seven I’ve got for to stay
For beatin’ a cop down our alley
‘Tain’t ’cause we mis-spells what we knows
But because all we light-fingered gentry
Hops around with a log on our toes

Verse 4
There’s the captain what is our commander
There’s the bos’n an’ all the ship’s crew
The married and also the single ones
Knows what we poor convicts go through

Verse 5
It ain’t that they don’t give us clothes
It’s all ’cause we light-fingered gentry
And on her soft bosom I’d lie

Verse 7

One of the most important experiments on light was made by Isaac Newton. He was the greatest of all English men of science. He discovered that sunshine (white light) is made up of many colours. Over 300 years ago, Sir Isaac Newton passed a beam of white light through a prism. A prism is a triangular piece of glass, which allows light to spread out into a band of six colors. These colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. Newton then sent this light through a second prism where the light became white once again.

What did Sir Isaac Newton do?
He first took the white light apart and then he put it back together again.

The most common example of a spectrum is the rainbow created in nature. The rainbow is caused by sunshine (white light) shining on water droplets that are in the air just after a summer shower. Thousands of these water droplets break up the light, just like Sir Isaac Newton’s prism. Can you make a rainbow? Of course! Make your own rainbow by turning on the garden hose, which has a nozzle that will make a fine mist, or spray. Make sure the sunlight is coming over your shoulder. You have made a rainbow.

If light is white and all we see is light why do things appear different colours?
Objects absorb some of the colours in the white light and then reflects the rest. The colours that are reflected provide the colour of a specific object. Think about these three basic colours (Red, Blue, Green), if an object absorbs green but reflects blue and red then the object will be purple. The mix of blue and red light gives us purple.

Did you know?
The computer screen you are looking at now can only produce three colours – Red, Blue and Green. So how do we see white on the screen? It follows Newton’s experiments on light and puts the three colours all together to create white.

EXPERIMENT TO TRY

Colour Wheel

Print out this template (you need a PDF reader like the one from Adobe).

Cut out the discs and then put a toothpick, or pencil, through the centre. You may need to fix the disc with a bit of sticky tape.

Spin the wheel and have a look at the colours that are created. Look at the outer ring of the first disc shown above and the colour should disappear.

Repeat with the other patterns and colours.

Note: You may need to stick the paper on to cardboard if your paper is too thin.

Can you colour your own wheel so that when it spins all the colours disappear? (Bring it to school for $500 reward money)

Fun Facts about Light

We do not know of anything in our universe that travels faster than light. The sunlight we see today left the sun 93 million miles away to reach us about 10 minutes later. Light from stars farther away may have taken billions of years to reach our eyes. How many times can light travel around the world while you are saying your name? ……………..more than four times.

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the richest, most complex and diverse ecosystems in the world. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park begins at the tip of Cape York in Queensland and extends south almost to Bundaberg. The area is larger than Victoria and Tasmania combined and stretches more than 2300km along the north-east coast of Australia.

Background:
Due to global warming, tourism, farming, mining and over fishing the Coral Reefs in Australia are being eroded and marine life is being threatened. You have been asked to prepare a report assessing the dangers to this fragile environment and suggest ways of preventing further damage in the future.

Task:
Which would you consider to be the biggest threat to the Great Barrier Reef and how do you propose to correct it?

DUE: Monday Week 8 (15th March)

Points to Consider:
What do you know about the Great Barrier Reef?
What are the threats that are affecting the Reef?
What are people doing now to preserve the Reef?

Where to start?

Work through the next three points:

1 What do I know about the Great Barrier Reef?

What is a Coral Reef?

How are Coral Reefs built?

Where is the Great Barrier Reef?

Name two types of Coral

What types of sea creatures live there?

What are three ways people use the Great Barrier Reef?

These sites may help:

Interactive Way to learn about Coral Reefs

Great Barrier Reef Explorer

2 What are the threats that affect the Reef and what is being done to stop these threats?

Name of Threat

Effect on Great Barrier Reef

What is being done to stop the threat?

These sites may help:

Reefs and why they are in Peril

3 What are people doing now to preserve the Reef?

These sites may help you identify what’s being done to stop the threats.

Conservation, Biodiversity & World Heritage

Powerpoint Presentation

Poster

Brochure

Video Production

Other (see me before starting)

How will the work be evaluated:

Accuracy of your information
