In class this term we have been doing a lot of work with Persuasive Writing. For the holidays, if you want, I have a wonderful task for you to try that will help show your persuasive skills.

Create a 30 second advertisement for a known product. Make sure you think about the persuasive techniques you can use to help influence your target audience.

Bring your advert to school when we return from the holidays and I will organise time for them to be seen by the class. They will be uploaded to the class blog if you do not use names that identify you/friends/family during the advert or in the credits.

Names

If you would like your video displayed on this blog, make sure that you do not use names that identify you during the advert or in the credits.

Tips:

Put People in Your Commercial
People relate to other people. Putting people into your commercial can help draw your target audience in as opposed to a 30 second shot of a building’s interior, exterior and the parking area. Be careful about having people waving at the camera or standing there smiling. Have them doing something that relates to your product so your commercial doesn’t look like a photo that’s come to life.

Plan Out Your Video
It’s important not to cram a bunch of video scenes into the small amount of time you have for your commercial. Your video should tell the story about what you’re advertising even if a customer has their volume turned down. If you want to create a very simple advert with little or know editing then make sure it is only one scene.

Writing the Script
Make sure your commercial’s script times out to 30 seconds. Use short sentences that grab your potential customer’s attention. You’ve got a very limited time frame to capture your audience and you need to get your message across quickly. Don’t get wrapped up in long sentences. Keep them short and punchy. Your audio should also tell the customer what you’re advertising even if the customer is in another room and can’t see the TV when your commercial airs.

Update:

Alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant sound in the beginning of multiple words in a sentence. In Latin, alliteration means “putting words together”.

Several rules must apply before a phrase is considered to contain alliteration. In each word, the first sound or the first stressed syllable must be identical. The letters used in the word are not taken into consideration. Therefore, “city” and “care” in a phrase would not alliterate, but the words “city” and “safe” do.

Each word must also come right after the other, or with only a few words separating them. Some examples are “Sally saw seashells” and “good children get many grapes.” A minimum of two words must meet these requirements.

The function of alliteration in speech is to be both attention getting and memorable. Advertisers and politicians use alliteration frequently for catchphrases, slogans, and jingles.

Go to TONGUE TWISTERS FOR KIDS and try saying a few tongue twisters. Start saying them slow and then speed it up as you get better at it.

Task:

In the comments, write your own Alliteration tongue twister that includes Onomatopoeia (words that imitate an actual sound such as woof, meow, tweet, slither, hiss, sizzle or slurp).

Example: The snake slithered through the slimey sludge of the swamp.

The video below is of a girl speed reading ‘Fox in Sock’s by Dr Suess. Fox in Socks contains both Alliteration and Onomatopoeia.

Fox in socks

Chicks with bricks come.
Chicks with blocks come.
Chicks with Bricks and
blocks and clocks come.

Look, sir. Look, sir.
Mr Knox, sir.
Let’s do tricks with
bricks and blocks, sir.
Let;s do tricks with
chicks and clocks, sir.

First, I’ll make a
quick trick brick stack.
Then I’ll make a
quick trick block stack.

You can make a
quick trick chick stack.
You can make a
trick clock stack.

And here’s a
new trick, Mr Knox….
Socks on chicks
and chicks on fox.
Fox on clocks
on bricks and blocks.
bricks and blocks
on Knox on blocks.

Now we come to
ticks and tocks, sir.
Try to say this
Mr Knox, sir….

Clocks on fox tick.
Clocks on Knox tock.
Six sick bricks tick.
Six sick chicks tock.

Please, sir. I don’t
like this trick, sir.
My tongue isn’t
quick or slick, sir.
I get all those
ticks and clocks, sir,
mixed up with the
chicks and tocks, sir.
I can’t do it, Mr. Fox, sir.

I’m so sorry,
Mr. Knox sir.

Here’s and easy
game to play.
Here’s an easy
thing to say…

New socks.
Two socks.
Whose socks?
Sue’s socks.

Who sews whose socks?
Sue sews Sue’s socks.

Who sees who sew
whose new socks, sir?
You see Sue sew
Sue’s new socks, sir.

That’s not easy,
Mr. Fox, sir.

Who comes?
Crow comes.
Slow Joe Crow comes.

Who sews crow’s clothes?
Sue sews crow’s clothes.
Slow Joe Crow
sews whose clothes?
Sue;s clothes.

Sue sews socks of
fox in socks now.

Slow Joe Crow sews
Knox in box now.

Sue sews rose
on Slow Joe Crow’s clothes.
Fox sews hose
on Slow Joe Crow’s nose

Hose goes.
Rose frows.
Nose hose goes some.
Crow’s rose grows some.

Mr Fox!
I hate this game, sir.
This game makes
my tongue quite lame, sir.

Mr. Knox, sir,
what a shame, sir.

We’ll find something
new to do now.
Here is lots of
new blue goo now.
New goo. Blue goo.
Gooey. Goeey.
Blue goo, New goo.
Gluey. Gluey.

Gooey goo
for chewy chewing!
That’s what that
Goo-Goose is doing
Do you choose to
chew goo, too, sir?
If, sir, you, sir,
choose to chew, sir,
with the Goo-Goose,
chew, sir. Do, sir.

Mr. Fox, sir,
I won’t do it.
I can’t say it.
I won’t chew it.

Very well, sir.
Step this way.
We’ll find another
game to play.

Bim comes.
Ben comes.
Bim bringgs Ben broom.
Ben brings Bim broom.

Ben bends Bim’s broom.
Bim bends Ben’s broom,
Bim’s bends,
Ben’s bends.
Ben’s bent broom breaks.
Bim’s bent broom breaks.

Ben’s band. Bim’s band.
Big bands. Pig bands.

Bim and Ben lead
bands with brooms.
Ben’s band bangs
and Bim’s band booms.

Pig band! Boom band!
Big band! Broom band!
My poor mouth can’t
say that. No Sir.
My pooor mouth is
much too slow, sir.

Well then…
bring your mouth this way.
I’ll find it something
it can say.

Luke Luck likes lakes.
Luke’s duck likes lakes.
Luke luck licks lakes.
Luke’s duck licks lakes.

Duck takes licks
in lakes Luke Luck likes.
Luke Luck takes licks
in lakes duck likes.

I can’t blah
such blibber blubber!
My tongue isn’t
made of runner.

Mr. Knox. Now
come now. Come now.
You don’t have to
be so dumb now….

Try to say this,
Mr, Knox, please….
Through three cheese trees
three free fleas flew.
While these fleas flew,
freezy breeze blew.
Freezy breeze made
these three trees freeze.
Freezy trees made
these trees’ cheese freeze
That’s what made these
three free fleas sneeze.

Stop it! Stop it!
That;s enough, sir.
I can’t say
such silly stuff, sir.

Very well, then
Mr. Knox, sir.
Let’s have a little talk
about tweetle beetles….

What do you know
about tweetle beetles?
well…

When tweetle beetles fight,
it’s called
a tweetle beetle battle.

And when they
battle in a puddle,
it’s a tweetle
beetle puddle battle.

AND when tweetle beetles
battle with paddles in a puddle,
they call it a tweetle
beetle puddle paddle battle.
AND…

When beetles battle beetles
in a puddle paddle battle
and the beetle battle puddle
is a puddle in a bottle…

…they call this
a tweetle beetle
bottle puddle
paddle battle muddle.
AND…

When beetles
fight these battles
in a bottle
with their paddles
and the bottle’s
on a poodle
and the poodle’s
eating noodles…

…they call this
a muddle puddle
tweetle poodle
beetle noodle
bottle paddle battle.
AND…

Now wait
a minute
Mr. Socks Fox!

When a fox is
in the bottle where
the tweetle beetls battle
with their paddles
in a puddle on a
noodle-eating poodle.
THIS is what they call…

…a tweetle beetle
noodle poodle bottles
paddled muddled duddled
fuddled wuddled
fox in sockx, sir!

Fox in socks,
our game us done, sir.
Thank you for
a lot of fun, sir

Taglines (often called slogans) are catchy short phrases used by marketers and film studios to advertise and sell a movie, and to sum up the plot, tone or themes of a film. Many films have multiple taglines. Composing for posters and trailers is generally the first step in marketing a film and setting a strategic direction for the product. These ‘sound-bite’ epigrams are often placed on either film posters (above or below the film’s title) or on the merchandise itself (DVD, movie trailer, etc), to reinforce what the film is all about.

In the following trailer there are several persuasive taglines.

When created persuasively, a tagline can become a memorable phrase that can repeatedly draw the audience to your product – lifting your brand message from the ordinary to the memorable. Its objective is to provide understanding of a product in less than seven or eight words.

Task 1 (optional): What movies are the following taglines from?

There are 3.7 trillion fish in the ocean. They’re looking for just one.

You won’t believe your eye.

Let the magic begin.

One dream. Four Jamaicans. Twenty below zero.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

Task 2: Memorable Taglines

List 3 memorable taglines you know from TV shows, movies, adverts, etc.

Task 3: Book Taglines

Create at least two taglines for a book you have read or are reading? (Don’t forget to include the book title.)

Taske 4: The Lorax

After watching the trailer, provide three reason why you would or would not want to see this movie.

When writing a persuasive text it can be difficult to work out the arguments of the “other side” and responding to those arguments within your arguments. The following class task will help you see the need to work out the other point of view before writing any persuasive text.

You are older now and your room is not as wonderful as it once was. It is time to try convince your parents to let you re-design your room.

When you go to ask them they reply:

NO!

and give you the following objections:

It’s too expensive.

You never even clean your room; why re-design?

You already spend too much time there. We only see you at meals as it is now.

or You never spend any time in your room; why should we bother?

Your brother (sister) is going to feel left out. We can’t start redecorating everyone’s room.

Your taste in interior decoration is questionable. We can’t paint ceilings and walls in school colours or indulge in other such fads.

I’ll end up doing all the work. I don’t have the time or the energy.

It’ll cost too much.

I said “No!”

Task: Write a persuasion that will convince your parents to change their mind.

The audience for your persuasion are your parents - an audience opposed to what you have to say. You must use direct speech and powerful words, though respectful and appropriate, to convince them of your side of the issue. This is done by providing arguments against the 9 objections from your parents. You may find it difficult to convince them on all nine objections, just do your best (8 out of 9 objections could still convince your parents to say yes).

Title: I want to re-design my room

Position: (outlines the issue and your point of view)

Arguments: ….. because ……

Conclusion: (restating position and main arguements)

When you have finished create a plan of how your new room will look.
